6 Steps to Install Docker Engine on Ubuntu

1. Uninstall old versions of Docker if any

$ sudo apt-get remove docker docker-engine docker.io containerd runc

2. Setup the repository

$ sudo apt-get update

$ sudo apt-get install \
    apt-transport-https \
    ca-certificates \
    curl \
    gnupg-agent \
    software-properties-common

3. Add docker official GPG Key

$ curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg | sudo apt-key add -

4. Add the stable repository

$ sudo add-apt-repository \
   "deb [arch=amd64] https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu \
   $(lsb_release -cs) \
   stable"

5. Install Docker Engine

sudo apt-get update 
sudo apt-get install docker-ce docker-ce-cli containerd.io

6. Check its running well

$ sudo docker run hello-world
